Keep Your Word
November 9th, 2016
Numbers 30:1-2
Have you ever told a friend you’d call her later, when you knew deep inside you had no intention of following through? Or maybe you told your mom you’d get around to cleaning underneath your bed soon, or you told your youth pastor you’d help with the fundraiser next time—and you knew you were only saying what you hoped would make them happy.
Sadly, it’s become the norm for people to say things they don’t really mean. We are not surprised when a politician breaks his word or a loved one doesn’t follow through on his promises. While these examples may seem commonplace to us, any statement that is not true is a lie. The Bible says that lying is detestable to God and even goes so far as to call Satan the father of lies.
Though we’re (hopefully) careful not to tell outright lies, our “white lies” and unfulfilled promises are no better in the eyes of God. When we make promises without following through, we compromise our integrity and reflect poorly on the body of Christ.
Pray: Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer (Psalm 19:14). I pray that I would offer up continual worship to You in my speech and my actions. I pray that I will always aim for a lifestyle of integrity.
