What is your treasure? Your time? Your family’s money? Your talents? Your heart will dwell wherever you invest your treasure. This is why it’s so important that we use our resources for God. To whatever we entrust our resources, we entrust our heart.
We sometimes think of walls in a negative sense: barriers that divide and separate, or obstacles that work against the cause of unity. Walls can have a positive connotation, too, however. Walls protect and preserve.
Legacy: the inheritance, good or bad, that one generation leaves to another. A legacy is the past’s gift to the present and the present’s gift to the future; it is the inevitable blessing or obstacle we pass to generations to come.
What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done? With a few exceptions, there’s a good chance that peer pressure inspired many of your worst choices. Maybe you were afraid to stand out, so you went along with the crowd. Maybe you wanted someone to think you were cool, so you tried something you knew was wrong. Maybe you spent a little too much time in a bad environment, and it rubbed off on you.
Imagine that God’s eyes are roaming throughout the earth, searching for someone whose heart is turned toward Him. When He sees you, warm approval fills His being; your integrity and love for truth leap out at Him, and His heart is delighted. Did you know God can actually feel this way about you?
Few pains are as cruel as the searing pierce of a thorn. Paul described a situation in his life that was like a thorn in his side, forever jabbing, forever throbbing, forever tormenting. He prayed multiple times that God would send relief, but God was more concerned about Paul’s spiritual condition than his comfort. God knew that because of the great things that had been revealed to him, Paul might become puffed up with pride if this thorn was removed.
Think of one time in the last twenty-four hours you’ve failed God. Maybe you didn’t commit some atrocious sin (not by human standards, anyway), but you were impatient with someone, or you were inflated with pride, or a thought crossed your mind that was unkind.
Being a child of God doesn’t mean you’re granted a life of bliss; that’s what Heaven is for! If you sometimes experience depression and inner turmoil, you’re in good company. Godly men such as David, Jeremiah, Elijah, and Job all went through times when they thought they’d be better off dead. But their stories don’t end there, and neither will yours!
Take a moment to list three things you’re extremely grateful for. All done? Hopefully that wasn’t too hard! Even if you’re pretty sure you failed that English quiz, or your best friend isn’t speaking to you right now, or your family was just dealt a hard blow, there is reason to be thankful. Sometimes, as society tells us that in order to be happy we need the coolest clothes, the richest dad, or the most enviable physique, we get so depressed thinking of what we don’t have that we forget to be grateful.
